Registering a Domain Name
As we’ve said elsewhere on this site, you cant just start blogging without organising the basics – in other words building in (establishing) those foundations.
One of the most important foundations of course, and one of the first steps you need to properly install and set up your WordPress Blog is to decide about, purchase and register a Domain Name. It’s your unique Web Address and as we all know it’s the address everyone needs to enter to get to a site.
Something you want to be identified with you and what you’re, maybe something eventually as easily identifiable as “WordPress.org” or “Google.com” even? All Doman Names are unique – there are no two exactly the same. And this fact can cause some delay in you coming up with a satisfactory name because if you decide on one that is already take – you simply can’t use it – you will need to find another.
Now this step can be frustrating and rather annoying but do take your time, do think carefully and certainly don’t rush it because you’re going to have to live with the results for a long long time.
One thing to be aware of and to watch out for and consider carefully is your Domain Names extension. For instance do you want:
.com
.co.uk
.net
.org
.info
.biz
Not sure, well consider it carefully. Although you may decide on a Domain Name that’s not available with that extension so possibly consider your alternatives?
WATCH OUT – say you register your Domain as “DachshundProducts.co.uk” and it becomes very popular. Then someone else comes along, notices that and takes advantage of that popularity by registering their Domain Name as “DachshundProducts.com”?
There’s absolutely nothing you can do about it, that is unless you have been wise enough to register the name under .net, .org, .info and .biz.
You need to consider the cost of registering your name, you see you don’t actually own the name you’re really just ‘leasing’ it for a set period of time just like a house or car.
